What is RNYSXUG and what does it stand for?

The Rochester NY SGML/XML User's Group (RNYSXUG) is a nonprofit organization, which promotes the effective use of SGML, XML and related technologies (e.g., CSS, DSSSL, XSL, XLINK, etc.) through education, and the open exchange of information. RNYSXUG also provides members with a forum in which to work with other developers, users, and vendors of SGML/XML solutions.

How long has RNYSXUG been in existence?

The group has been in existence, on and off, for about 5 years.

Is RNYSXUG part of a national organization?

Although we have discussed the feasibility of joining the International SGML Users Group, the RNYSXUG is not currently affiliated with any national or international group.

Who can join RNYSXUG?

Anyone interested in SGML or XML or related standards can join the group. There is no formal membership (dues and officials) at present. We are very informal and have a wide range of experience and interests.

What companies are represented in the RNYSXUG membership?

The current active membership consists of individuals from the following organizations: Kodak, Xerox, Document Management Solutions, Inc., ResourX, Research Institute of America Group, and West Group.

When are the meetings held?

The meetings are held the fourth Wednesday of every month (as of spring 2002). We may change this schedule to accommodate speakers and avoid conflicts with other events of interest to members. Please check the website schedule page for more information. Locations also vary. Please send us email if you want to be on the mailing list for meeting information.

What time are the meetings?

Most meetings will be from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

What is a typical meeting like?

We usually start out with introductions ( for those who have never participated ). We then go over any team reports (i.e. web site development team), and the status of any "deliverables" from the last meeting. The last part of the meeting is either a vendor demonstration, a member-led tutorial, or a member technical presentation.

Do I need to attend all RNYSXUG meetings?

Although it is not a requirement that all members attend all meetings, it is strongly encouraged.

How can I suggest topics for meetings?

All members should feel free to suggest topics for discussion at the meetings.

If I or someone I know is an expert on a topic, can I get on the agenda for a meeting?

The group welcomes all of its members to volunteer to present on any topic they deem appropriate.

If I am interested in a particular topic, how can I get it on the agenda for a meeting?

If you are interested in hearing a discussion on a certain topic, you should bring it up at the meeting or discuss it with the meeting coordinator.

Will I be responsible for organizing any meetings?

To minimize on the impact of the group on one person the group decided to alternate meeting organizers. Of course, it will always be on a volunteer basis.
